Ira Gardner has worked full time as a professional photographer since 1989 and was nationally certified as a commercial photographer by the Professional Photographers of America in 1995. He majored in communication studies and journalism at Eastern Washington University and has completed graduate level coursework in fine art, media theory, and filmmaking at Vermont College and The New School University in New York.
From 1995 – 2005 Ira operated Gold Management Systems which was a business management software and consulting business that helped clients all over the United States. His software specialized in production management, customer relationship management, and automated accounting and payroll systems that were certified by a CPA accounting firm. It was one of the earliest systems available with TCP/IP networking over the internet that enabled clients to connect offices from remote locations. In addition to this he provided his clients video training materials, workshops and consulting services on how to develop financial models to develop effective marketing and management decisions.
Ira has served on the board of directors for the Professional Photographers of Washington and the Spokane Film Project and as chair of the Northwest Region of the Society for Photographic Education. He is a documentary filmmaker who has produced films on acclaimed photographers Arnold Newman, Leonid Bergoltsev, and Willis Bell as well as the changing media landscape and its impact on the newspaper industry. He also produces numerous video tutorials on film photography and digital media production techniques.
Ira joined the photography faculty at Spokane Falls Community College in 1997, teaching classes in still photography, digital media production, documentary filmmaking, and business practices. Many of Ira’s students have gone on to successful careers in photography and filmmaking. In 2017 Ira received the Exceptional Faculty Award.
In addition to teaching Ira served as chair of the department of Applied Visual Arts (which includes Photography, Digital Media Production, Graphic Design, Interior Design, and Journalism) for 8 years and he served as chair of the College Graduation Requirements and Curriculum Committee for 13 years. He is currently serving as the General Education Outcomes Assessment Coordinator at Spokane Falls Community College.
Ira has worked extensively in developing teaching and assessment strategies for face to face, hybrid, and online classroom environments.
In addition to teaching, Ira also does freelance projects including print and ebook design and publishing, gallery exhibitions, video and commercial photography assignments along with media and business consulting work.
